A Florida woman says she lost more than $50,000 after fraudsters posing as Chase Bank employees convinced her that her accounts had been compromised.
Plant City resident Dahiana Ponce says she received a phone call on the morning of July 9th from someone claiming to represent Chase Bank, reports WFLA News Channel 8.
“Around 9:19, I received a phone call, stating that some fraudulent account transactions had been going through my account. They gave me the bank account information to link their account to mine on my phone.”
Ponce says she was instructed to move money from both her personal and business accounts into another account the callers claimed was secure.
She initially transferred $4,524.13 from her personal account using Cash App before the fraudsters persuaded her to withdraw the entire balance from her business account.
Ponce says she transferred another $45,803 from the business account, bringing her total losses to $50,327.
“I wanted to buy a house, you know, start making my own family. Yeah, that was the plan.”
She adds that the scammers also instructed her to initiate a $25,000 wire transfer, but the transaction was later canceled after she received an email displaying the Chase logo.
Ponce says she abruptly reported the incident to the authorities. She says investigators advised her to ask the bank to place a hold on the recipient account, but she was told that was not possible because the account did not belong to her.
Says Chase Bank in a statement,
“We confirmed that our branch employees asked this customer multiple questions before the transaction, including the purpose of the transaction, and attempted to educate her about potential scams. Our bankers are trained to spot scams, and we urge customers to be truthful so they can help protect them.”
But Ponce disputes the bank’s claims, saying employees never warned her about a possible scam before allowing her to withdraw the money.
“They did not tell me anything. They just let me withdraw the money.”
