A Rosemead resident is now in custody after allegedly posing as a McAfee Security representative to steal tens of thousands of dollars in cash from a 70-year-old Camarillo man.
The victim says he reported the theft to police in May 2026 after receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be from the security software company, reports KTLA 5 News.
The elderly man says the alleged scammer told him his bank account information may have been compromised and provided accurate banking details to seem legitimate.
The victim says that over a span of a few days, the alleged fraudster convinced him to withdraw $84,000 in cash and meet with a McAfee Security employee. He says he was instructed to provide a verbal security code before handing over the money.
After following the instructions and handing over the cash to 44-year-old Binchao Cen, the elderly man says he realized he had been scammed and reported the incident to the Camarillo Police Department.
Authorities say that on June 30th, they reached out to Cen while he was en route to meet with another potential victim. The police say they abruptly arrested Cen, who was found in possession of a huge sum of cash and a modified airsoft gun.
Cen is now facing charges of theft by false pretenses, grand theft and theft from an elderly adult. His bail was set at $500,000.
