A sprawling bank fraud conspiracy has resulted in federal charges against 13 individuals for diverting more than $1 million through stolen checks.
The group operated out of New York, stealing checks and using them to victimize residents, businesses and financial institutions, says the U.S. Department of Justice.
The 14-count indictment details how the defendants allegedly participated in the scheme involving forged and stolen checks passed through the banking system.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) described the operation as far-reaching, noting it diverted substantial funds and harmed community members who rely on local banks.
The charges were unsealed in mid-June following an April arrest of the lead defendant.
Prosecutors emphasize the impact on honest residents and businesses whose funds were targeted.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat check fraud in the banking system.
Says HSI Buffalo Acting Special Agent in Charge Anthony Patrone,
“These charges describe a far-reaching bank fraud scheme that diverted more than a million dollars in stolen checks and victimized honest residents, businesses, and financial institutions that sustain our communities. HSI Albany remains firmly dedicated to uncovering and disrupting fraud schemes that prey on hardworking people and exploit the banking and mail systems for personal gain. Working in close coordination with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, HSI continues to prioritize safeguarding the public and protecting the integrity of our financial systems.”
