FBI Investigates Dark Web Sale of 153,000,000 Stolen American Driver’s Licenses

Federal investigators are examining how scans of more than 150 million driver’s licenses and other identity documents reached a dark-web marketplace for sale.

The inquiry centers on an apparent ongoing breach at a Louisiana identity verification firm whose systems handle millions of checks monthly at thousands of locations, reports The New York Times.

The Nexus service advertised roughly 153 million U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses plus millions of additional travel documents, residency cards and medical cards.

It claimed continuous access to a major verification company serving Fortune 500 clients and added hundreds of thousands of new records daily.

Timestamps on many scans matched dates when individuals used their licenses at car rental counters or other verification points.

The New Orleans FBI field office opened an official probe into the apparent source of the images.

The service went offline shortly after initial coverage, replacing its login page with a message that it was no longer available.

The verification company stated it is investigating but has not issued a public breach notice.
