The diversified manufacturing company announced second-quarter earnings of $2.40 per share, beating analyst expectations which ranged from $2.24 to $2.25. Quarterly revenue totaled $6.5 billion, exceeding the anticipated $6.4 billion.

In comparison, the same period last year saw 3M report earnings of $2.16 per share with revenue of $6.2 billion. The year-over-year advancement represented substantial progress.

The company’s organic sales expansion reached 5.4% during the quarter. This marked a substantial acceleration from Q1’s 1.2% growth rate, indicating strengthening business momentum.

The adjusted operating margin improved to 24.9%, representing a 40 basis point increase compared to the prior year. The company generated $1.0 billion in operating cash flow during the quarter, while adjusted free cash flow totaled $1.3 billion.

CEO William Brown expressed satisfaction with the results. “We delivered a strong second quarter, exceeding expectations with mid-single-digit sales growth, robust operating margins of about 25%, and double-digit EPS growth,” he stated.

Enhanced Annual Projections

3M increased its 2026 full-year EPS outlook to between $8.80 and $8.95. This represents an upgrade from the previous $8.50 to $8.70 range announced in April, and surpasses the Wall Street consensus estimate of $8.74.

The industrial manufacturer also projected adjusted total sales growth exceeding 4.5%, with organic sales growth anticipated to top 3.5%. The company reaffirmed its adjusted operating margin target of 24.9%, marking a 40 basis point year-over-year improvement.

For perspective, when 3M originally released its 2026 forecast in January, the midpoint stood at $8.60 — slightly below analyst projections. The stock dropped 7% on January 20 and struggled to regain momentum.

Prior to Tuesday’s announcement, MMM stock remained approximately 1% lower for the year.

Factors Behind the Strong Quarter

The second-quarter performance exceeded expectations across multiple metrics. Revenue, profitability, margins, and cash generation all outperformed forecasts. The updated guidance positioned the new midpoint at $8.875, surpassing analyst consensus.

Looking at the complete fiscal year, 3M anticipates sales approaching $25.4 billion. This exceeds the April projection of $25.3 billion and tops the $25.1 billion analysts had forecasted.

S&P 500 and Dow futures showed modest gains Tuesday morning, rising 0.5% and 0.4% respectively, with 3M’s strong results contributing to market optimism.

The revised full-year earnings guidance of $8.80 to $8.95 per share now exceeds the prevailing Wall Street consensus of $8.74.
