In a historic move, American and British authorities have formalized a collaborative law enforcement pact designed to dismantle scam operations exploiting cryptocurrency and digital investment platforms.
The Department of Justice revealed the memorandum of understanding on Thursday. This agreement unites the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, England and Wales’ Crown Prosecution Service, and the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom.
Justice Department officials characterized it as an unprecedented international law enforcement collaboration of this nature.
The agreement establishes protocols for conducting simultaneous investigations targeting the same criminal organizations. Participating agencies will share intelligence on transnational crime syndicates and coordinate jurisdictional decisions for prosecution.
Authorities report they have already identified cases with overlapping jurisdiction. An on-site disruption operation involving commercial sector collaborators is planned for early October in London.
This partnership expands upon the Scam Center Strike Force, initiated by US Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro in November 2025. The task force specifically pursues Chinese criminal enterprises operating fraudulent compounds throughout Southeast Asian nations.
Multiple federal agencies contribute to the strike force, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Secret Service, IRS Criminal Investigation division, and Homeland Security Investigations. Additional support comes from the Treasury Department, State Department, and commercial partners.
Data from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reveals that cryptocurrency investment fraud generated $8.65 billion in reported losses during 2025. This represents an 89% escalation from the $4.57 billion documented in 2023.
Law enforcement officials emphasize that true financial damages likely exceed reported figures substantially, as numerous victims fail to file complaints.
The Justice Department notes these fraudulent enterprises frequently involve human trafficking operations and extensive money laundering schemes.
Global law enforcement has already demonstrated coordination on comparable initiatives. Dubai police orchestrated a multinational operation on April 29 alongside the FBI and China’s Ministry of Public Security. This coordinated strike resulted in 276 detentions and eliminated at least nine cryptocurrency scam facilities.
Authorities charged six individuals for orchestrating schemes utilizing counterfeit crypto investment platforms to extract deposits from unsuspecting targets.
Southeast Asian nations have pursued stricter regulatory measures. Myanmar’s military administration introduced legislation in May establishing sentences ranging from a decade to life imprisonment for digital currency fraud. Capital punishment could be imposed in cases involving worker fatalities.
Myanmar’s legislative body approved the measure on July 28, although presidential approval remained pending at that time.
This unprecedented US-UK collaboration represents an evolving strategy in global efforts to eliminate cryptocurrency fraud operations spanning multiple jurisdictions.
