In a span of just days, Metaplanet executed Bitcoin transfers exceeding $420M to Coinbase Prime, yet the cryptocurrency markets responded with remarkable calm.
The publicly-traded Japanese entity moved approximately 2,400 BTC across two separate transactions on August 25 and August 28, totaling around $186M. Shortly thereafter, an additional 3,000 BTC—valued near $237M—shifted to the same destination on August 29. A subsequent deposit of 800 BTC, worth about $62.2M, was documented by blockchain analytics provider Onchain Lens.
Combined, these movements represent more than 3,200 BTC transferred to Coinbase Prime since late August.
Observers analyzing on-chain activity without deeper understanding might have interpreted these figures as concerning. Historically, significant exchange inflows have often preceded selling pressure.
However, Coinbase Prime operates fundamentally differently from consumer-facing exchanges. As an institutional prime brokerage service, it provides custody solutions, trade execution, and financing capabilities. For corporations managing substantial Bitcoin reserves, this platform functions more like secure storage infrastructure than a liquidation venue.
CEO Simon Gerovich swiftly addressed emerging questions, explicitly confirming that these transfers constitute custody arrangements with zero intention of selling assets.
Metaplanet has previously sparked similar on-chain speculation. Earlier in August, the organization relocated more than 5,000 BTC among its various internal custody wallets. Gerovich characterized those movements as standard operational procedures—the type of treasury management activities common among institutional Bitcoin holders.
Currently, Metaplanet’s Bitcoin position totals approximately 43,000 BTC. The aggregate acquisition cost reaches around $4.09B, establishing an average purchase price of roughly $96,191 per Bitcoin.
This accumulation approach mirrors the MicroStrategy model: leveraging equity offerings, convertible debt instruments, and operating revenues to build Bitcoin positions as core treasury holdings.
The company has previously indicated plans to deploy its Bitcoin reserves in yield-generating strategies including lending programs to support operational expenses. Coinbase Prime delivers precisely these institutional financing capabilities, providing additional rationale for the recurring deposits.
Parallel to these custody transfers, Metaplanet continues developing a distinct strategic initiative. The corporation has proposed allocating 2,100 BTC alongside $2.5M in cash toward establishing Superplanet.
Superplanet represents a planned US-domiciled, Nasdaq-traded Bitcoin treasury company, structured through collaboration with Super League Enterprises.
The proposed 2,100 BTC allocation would constitute approximately 4.9% of Metaplanet’s existing Bitcoin position. This transaction requires shareholder authorization, with voting scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Bitcoin’s market valuation displayed negligible response to these transfers, despite hundreds of millions in BTC moving transparently across blockchain networks.
The latest 800 BTC deposit valued at approximately $62.19M, verified by Onchain Lens, reinforces Metaplanet’s consistent approach to institutional-caliber Bitcoin treasury operations.
