South Korean memory chip manufacturer SK Hynix is evaluating a possible collaborative venture to establish a semiconductor production facility in Japan, signaling the company’s commitment to expanding manufacturing capabilities in response to increasing artificial intelligence demands.
Chairman Chey Tae-won of SK Group acknowledged the ongoing discussions during meetings between business organizations from South Korea and Japan held in Sendai. The company has not finalized decisions regarding the specific location, investment amount, or potential partnership arrangements.
“We are looking all over Japan,” Chey said. “Anywhere with good power and good water.”
This Japanese expansion consideration represents one component of SK Hynix’s comprehensive strategy to enhance worldwide manufacturing capacity. The chipmaker recently commenced construction of a chip packaging operation in West Lafayette, Indiana, while simultaneously planning a substantial 54 trillion won ($39 billion) investment to expand its South Korean manufacturing infrastructure.
Miyagi Prefecture officials in Japan are mounting an intensive campaign to secure the manufacturing facility, proposing a 300,000-square-meter location complemented by enhanced water and electrical infrastructure specifically designed for semiconductor manufacturing operations.
Tokyo has demonstrated strong commitment to providing substantial financial incentives for international semiconductor manufacturers. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has previously received such support, positioning SK Hynix as a potential candidate for similar benefits.
Competing memory chip producer Micron Technology currently maintains production facilities in Hiroshima. Additionally, Japan hosts numerous SK Hynix supply chain partners, including Tokyo Electron, along with major customers such as Sony and Nintendo.
SK Hynix maintains an indirect ownership position in Kioxia Holdings, the Japanese flash memory manufacturer based in Tokyo. CEO Kwak Noh-jung recently indicated that SK Hynix is “carefully looking at how we can co-develop the NAND flash market with our customers and suppliers.”
Demand for both high-bandwidth memory products and NAND flash storage has experienced substantial growth as technology giants including Meta and Amazon expand data storage capabilities to support artificial intelligence computing requirements.
SK Hynix manufactures critical components utilized in Nvidia’s artificial intelligence processors, establishing the company as a crucial supplier in the ongoing AI infrastructure expansion.
Company executives anticipate that worldwide memory chip supply limitations will extend through 2030, making production capacity enhancement a strategic imperative for the foreseeable future.
Chey also used the Sendai meetings to make a broader point about regional economic cooperation. “Now is the time for Korea and Japan to form an economic bloc,” he said at an event focused on the two countries’ shrinking workforces.
The company has not announced a specific timeframe for reaching a final determination on the Japanese manufacturing venture.
