Bitwise and Nordic Fund Manager Explore Crypto Products

20-Jul-2026 Coindoo

Key Takeaways

  • Alfakraft has confirmed a strategic partnership with crypto asset manager Bitwise.
  • Bitwise already offers seven crypto ETPs on Nasdaq Stockholm, so the agreement is not its first Nordic entry.
  • No product, asset list, fee, launch date or regulatory approval has been announced.
  • The regulatory and tax treatment will depend on the investment structure eventually selected.

Alfakraft’s official website confirms that the agreement forms part of its 2026 growth strategy. The company operates in Sweden and Luxembourg, while Bitwise manages exchange-traded products, staking strategies, indexes and private crypto mandates.

History

1998
Alfakraft was founded by Bengt Lindblad with a focus on electricity trading.

1999
The company receives a license from the Financial Supervisory Authority to operate as a securities company. Alfakraft was for several years one of the largest players on the Nordpool electricity exchange.

2007
Alfakraft Fonder is launched.

2009
The company expands its operations by offering management in more asset classes.

2024
Alfakraft Fonder starts a subsidiary in Luxembourg.

2026
Alfakraft adopts a new ambitious strategy, recruits a sales CEO and starts strategic partnerships with Bitwise and Luccai.

No investable product has been announced. The agreement creates a framework for developing possible offerings rather than a fund that institutions can already access.

Bitwise Already Has a Nordic Market Presence

The partnership does not mark Bitwise’s first expansion into Sweden.

In January 2026, the company listed seven crypto ETPs on Nasdaq Stockholm. The range includes products linked to Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana, along with a diversified digital-asset index and a strategy combining Bitcoin with gold.

Those instruments trade in Swedish kronor through conventional securities accounts, depending on availability through individual brokers. Alfakraft could help Bitwise move beyond its existing exchange-traded range by exploring fund structures or managed mandates built for European institutional requirements.

Bitwise’s own institutional adoption map shows how broad that demand has become: 21 of 24 major financial institutions tracked by the firm are active in crypto ETPs, while 17 are involved in tokenization and 16 in trading or custody. That backdrop helps explain why the Alfakraft partnership is focused on regulated investment structures rather than direct crypto ownership.

What Each Company Contributes

Alfakraft Fonder is an authorised Swedish fund manager whose Financial Supervisory Authority register entry includes permissions covering investment funds, alternative investment funds, investment advice and discretionary portfolio management.

Its partnership model covers legal structuring, implementation, launch and ongoing fund administration. The company also supports Swedish and Luxembourg vehicles, including white-label and co-branded products.

Bitwise reports more than $11 billion in client assets across over 70 products and strategies in the United States and Europe. Its existing range includes physically backed Bitcoin and Ethereum products, staking ETPs, crypto indexes and exposure to assets such as Solana, XRP, Litecoin and Canton Network.

The combination could help address practical barriers that arise when institutions invest in digital assets. Pensions, insurers and foundations may require regulated custody, independent valuation, audited reporting, liquidity controls and portfolio limits before they can allocate capital.

No institution has been named as a client of the partnership, and there is no evidence that any pension fund, insurer or foundation has committed money.

No Asset List Has Been Confirmed

Bitcoin and Ethereum would be plausible candidates because Bitwise already manages products linked to both assets. Its European platform also includes Solana and diversified crypto strategies.

Those existing products do not confirm what Alfakraft and Bitwise will launch together. Claims involving an initial Bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana fund, or later exposure to XRP, Chainlink or the Bitwise 10 Large Cap Crypto Index, remain speculative until the companies publish a prospectus or product announcement.

A Regulated Structure Changes Access, Not Crypto Risk

A conventional fund or exchange-traded wrapper can simplify custody, reporting and administration. It does not remove the volatility of the underlying assets.

Investors could still face sharp price movements, limited liquidity and differences between a product’s trading price and the value of its crypto holdings. Staking strategies introduce additional variables, including validator performance, changing reward rates, lock-up conditions and potential penalties.

The applicable European rules will depend on the final design. It would be inaccurate to describe every future product as simply “MiCA-compliant.” Crypto-assets classified as financial instruments are excluded from MiCA and remain subject to existing securities and fund rules, which may include MiFID, the Prospectus Regulation, UCITS or the alternative investment fund framework.

Luxembourg Tax Benefits Cannot Yet Be Assumed

Alfakraft operates in Luxembourg, and its legal information identifies an existing Luxembourg SICAV governed by Part II of the country’s 2010 investment fund law. That does not establish which structure will be used for the Bitwise partnership.

No announcement identifies a Specialised Investment Fund, or SIF, or a Reserved Alternative Investment Fund, known as a RAIF.

Luxembourg’s official tax guidance states that SIFs and RAIFs are generally subject to an annual subscription tax of 0.01% of net assets. Other collective investment vehicles can face a general rate of 0.05%, with reductions and exemptions available only when specific conditions are met.

The partnership cannot yet be assigned either rate. Claims involving automatic exemptions from corporate income tax, capital gains tax, withholding tax or VAT would also require confirmation of the legal vehicle, investment activity and investor jurisdiction.

What Investors Still Need to Know

The partnership will become easier to evaluate once the firms disclose:

  • The name, domicile and legal form of the first product
  • The underlying assets or investment strategy
  • The regulator and approval process
  • The eligible investor group and minimum allocation
  • The custodian, administrator and valuation method
  • The management fee, liquidity terms and expected launch date

A prospectus would also clarify whether Alfakraft will act as fund manager, distributor or structuring partner and whether Bitwise will provide an index, an investment mandate or an underlying crypto product.

Until those documents appear, the agreement should be viewed as an expansion of institutional product-development capacity rather than evidence that a new European crypto fund is ready to accept capital.
