Ontology Mainnet Halted for Security Upgrade After Targeted Attack

01-Sep-2026 Crypto Economy

Ontology said September 1 that its Mainnet will remain temporarily paused after the core development team identified malicious attack activity targeting the network during an ongoing security review. The shutdown is precautionary, with the targeted attack now driving an urgent network upgrade and validator-led response before normal operations can resume.

The team said its investigation found no compromise of user assets. Developers, validators and ecosystem partners are completing remediation, upgrading affected network components, running internal security checks and validating network integrity, consensus and operational stability, while asset safety remains the threshold for bringing the chain back online.

Ontology said it aims to restore Mainnet operations within 24 hours, provided all remediation, testing and security verification are completed successfully. The review will also continue after the immediate upgrade with third-party security organizations, making successful post-upgrade validation the decisive condition for ending the pause rather than a fixed restart deadline.
