Rahul Agarwal, a 30-year-old software developer employed by CoinDCX, was detained following a probe into the $44 million theft that rocked the exchange earlier in July. Investigators traced the unauthorized transfers back to Agarwal’s office-assigned laptop—the only device flagged during internal audits.

The breach began subtly, with a single USDT transaction raising suspicions. But within hours, funds had drained into six separate wallets, leaving CoinDCX scrambling to respond.

When questioned, Agarwal insisted he wasn’t involved. However, he admitted to taking on freelance projects for unknown individuals and receiving suspicious messages and files from a foreign number over WhatsApp—allegedly from Germany.

Police were further alarmed by an unexplained $17,000 deposit in his account, prompting a deeper investigation into whether Agarwal was a pawn in a remote attack or knowingly participated.

Authorities are now analyzing his devices to determine the true nature of the breach—whether it was a case of compromised credentials or a deliberate inside job.
