The feature will debut for U.S. customers — with New York excluded — and run on Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, Base. The company says it plans to gradually add other blockchains, starting with Solana, and will enable trading on platforms like Uniswap and Aerodrome without requiring users to leave the Coinbase app.
With this integration, Coinbase claims its asset offering will jump from roughly 300 tokens to potentially millions, allowing new projects to be listed and traded moments after launch. Among the Base-native tokens expected to be available early are Virtuals AI Agents, Reserve Protocol DTFs, SoSo Value Indices, Auki Labs, and Super Champs.
The timing of the move comes as Coinbase faces a slowdown in spot trading volumes and quarterly revenue. The company recently outlined a broader vision of becoming an “everything exchange,” aiming to include tokenized equities, prediction markets, and early-stage token sales under its umbrella.
Despite its shares rising over 20% year-to-date, the stock has dropped sharply since July highs above $400, now trading around $304. Increased competition from platforms such as Kraken and Robinhood — both known for wider asset selection and lower fees — has added to the pressure in the U.S. market.
Coinbase is betting that deepening access to decentralized markets could help recapture growth by positioning itself as the primary gateway to the next generation of digital assets.
