The key lies in the little-used HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code — introduced about 30 years ago but rarely adopted on the traditional web.
Combined with Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 3009, it now allows autonomous AI agents to send stablecoin payments automatically, according to the Ethereum Foundation.
In a post shared by Coinbase developers Kevin Leffew and Lincoln Murr, the pair said this setup could make AI agents some of Ethereum’s most active users. Coinbase has already integrated HTTP 402 through its open-source “x402 payments protocol.”
The system lets AI agents receive a payment request, sign a transaction, and send funds instantly to unlock a service — no accounts or manual approvals needed. This could cover everything from self-driving taxis paying for their own fuel to AI models buying storage space or accessing APIs.
Leffew and Murr compared it to a vending machine: you put in the payment, and the product is delivered in one smooth transaction. Ethereum’s secure settlement layer makes the process efficient, cutting down on disputes and complex billing systems.
Some developers are already experimenting. Hyperbolic Labs has added the feature to its large language model, while Prodia Labs is using it for AI-generated images and video. The technology could allow AI systems to link services together into self-sustaining “economic loops” — earning and spending without human oversight.
Leffew and Murr believe the combination of stablecoins, programmable wallets, and Ethereum’s infrastructure provides exactly what AI agents need to manage payments independently, paving the way for entirely new types of decentralized e-commerce.
