The airline will match the federal government’s $1,000 seed contribution with its own one-time $1,000 payment for eligible children of employees. Thousands of American Airlines workers’ children are expected to qualify.
CEO Robert Isom said the move fits with the airline’s purpose of caring for people on life’s journey, including helping employees build financial security for their families.
American Airlines joins over 50 companies that have already committed to Trump Account contributions in some form. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are among those offering a full match of the government’s $1,000 contribution.
Trump Accounts, officially called 530A accounts, are tax-deferred savings vehicles for U.S. children under 18. Parents of babies born between 2025 and 2028 who open an account receive the $1,000 Treasury deposit automatically.
After the account is opened, parents, guardians, grandparents, and others can contribute up to $5,000 per year until the year before the child turns 18.
The U.S. Treasury has proposed regulations that would let employees fund their children’s Trump Accounts using pretax dollars directly from their paychecks. American Airlines plans to offer this option once the rules are finalized.
Starting in 2027, eligible American Airlines employees will be able to contribute up to $2,500 in pretax earnings annually to a Trump Account. Around one-third of the airline’s nearly 140,000 global employees will have access to this option.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent welcomed the move, saying it was encouraging to see leading companies supporting the initiative.
Roughly 1.4 million children have already been signed up for Trump Accounts and are in line for the federal seed money, according to the latest Treasury data.
American Airlines has not specified the exact number of employee children expected to qualify, but described it as “thousands.”
Financial experts generally recommend enrolling in Trump Accounts when an employer or the government is offering free contributions.
The airline’s formal matching program makes it one of the more comprehensive corporate offerings around Trump Accounts, combining a one-time employer match with a future pretax contribution option.
American Airlines currently has nearly 140,000 employees worldwide.
