TLDR

  • Bitwise is closing its Dogecoin ETF (BWOW), with final trading ending October 14, 2026
  • Shareholders will receive cash payouts based on the October 21 net asset value, distributed October 22
  • DOGE dropped around 2.6% following the announcement, trading near $0.084 on September 11
  • BWOW saw only $318,000 in net inflows during August, far behind Bitcoin and Ether products
  • Rising bond yields added extra pressure on crypto prices the same day

Bitwise Investment Advisors announced on September 10 that it will close and liquidate its Dogecoin ETF, ticker BWOW, less than a year after it launched on November 26, 2025.

The fund will stop trading before NYSE Arca opens on October 15. Investors who want to sell can do so through the close of October 14. No new shares will be created after that date.

Bitwise will convert BWOW’s Dogecoin holdings to cash on October 14. The fund’s net asset value will be calculated on October 21, and cash distributions will be sent to shareholders’ brokerage accounts on October 22.

The company said it is closing the fund to “optimize its product range to meet evolving investor needs.” It did not cite trading volume or assets under management as reasons.

Analyst li Charts flagged a potential short-term bounce signal for DOGE around the same time. They noted that the TD Sequential indicator flashed a buy signal on the 4-hour chart, pointing to three recent cases where similar signals were followed by rebounds of 6.96%, 2.71%, and 11.25%.

Low Demand Told the Story

BWOW’s trading data showed limited investor interest from early on. The fund generated close to $3 million in volume during its launch week but never returned to that level.

All U.S. Dogecoin ETF products combined recorded only $318,000 in net inflows during August. For comparison, Hyperliquid ETFs pulled in enough volume to reach $2.1 billion in total trading since launch, while Zcash and Chainlink funds hit around $1.5 billion and $680 million respectively.

Total trading volume across Dogecoin ETFs came in at roughly $300 million since launch. That figure covers shares exchanged, not net deposits.

DOGE Price Reacts

DOGE was trading near $0.084 on September 11, down around 2.6% from the previous session. The decline followed the Bitwise announcement, though market data does not confirm the ETF closure directly caused the drop.

Bond yields also rose on the same day, driven partly by an in-line producer price index reading. Higher yields tend to reduce appetite for riskier assets like crypto.

Bitwise still holds around $9 billion in client assets across more than 70 products, including ETFs tied to Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, and others. Closing BWOW does not affect those offerings.

Investors holding BWOW through liquidation should be aware that the final cash distribution may create a taxable event, depending on purchase price, holding period, and account type.
