Ciena (CIEN) posted a strong fiscal third quarter, with AI-driven demand continuing to fuel growth in its networking business. The stock jumped 7% in premarket trading to $379.85 on Thursday after the results dropped.

Adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.11, a 215% jump from the 67 cents reported in the same quarter last year. That crushed Wall Street’s estimate of $1.73.

Revenue for the quarter ended August 1 hit $1.67 billion, up 37% year-over-year. Analysts had expected $1.64 billion, per FactSet.

GAAP EPS was $1.83 for the quarter. Non-GAAP EBITDA came in at $411.1 million, up 160% compared to the same period last year.

Optical Networking, Ciena’s largest segment, brought in $1.19 billion in revenue, up from $815.5 million a year ago. That segment alone accounted for over 71% of total revenue.

Guidance Raised Across the Board

Ciena raised its full-year fiscal 2026 revenue outlook to $6.42 billion, plus or minus $50 million. That represents a 35% increase year-over-year at the midpoint.

For Q4, the company is guiding for revenue of $1.75 billion, plus or minus $50 million. Adjusted gross margin is expected in the range of 45%, with adjusted operating margin around 20%.

CEO Gary Smith pointed to AI as the engine behind the results. “AI continues to drive compounding waves of network investment,” he said, calling Ciena the “only pure-play optical systems and interconnects provider.”

Two customers together accounted for 41.7% of total revenue in the quarter. Ciena also bought back approximately 0.4 million of its own stock for $171.7 million during the period as part of its $1 billion repurchase program.

Stock Performance in Context

Despite the strong quarter, the stock’s recent path has been bumpy. CIEN had gained 51% year-to-date through Wednesday’s close, but it has also fallen 43% from its peak on June 2.

Wednesday’s close was down 1.7% before the earnings report came out.

CFO Marc Graff noted that expanding supply capacity and improving operating leverage are positioning the company to “accelerate earnings” going forward.

Non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 22.5% in Q3, up from 10.7% in the same quarter last year.

Routing and Switching revenue came in at $164.4 million, up from $125.9 million a year ago. Global Services revenue totaled $193.6 million compared to $160.2 million in Q3 2025.
