Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) dropped roughly 4% to $32.89 in mid-day trading on Monday, July 20, while the S&P 500 gained 0.5% and the Nasdaq rose 0.9%. The move is stock-specific — there is no single fresh headline driving it.
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc., CMG
The most likely explanation is a combination of pre-earnings caution, margin pressure, and a recent analyst price target cut, all stacking up ahead of the company’s Q2 2026 results on July 29.
Analysts expect Chipotle to report earnings of $0.32 per share for Q2, which would be a decline of about 3% from the same period last year.
The margin story has been the key overhang for CMG investors. In Q1 2026, operating margin came in at 12.9%, down sharply from 16.7% a year earlier. Restaurant-level operating margin fell to 23.7% from 26.2%.
Revenue in Q1 grew 7.4% year over year to $3.09 billion, and comparable restaurant sales edged up 0.5%. EPS came in at $0.24, in line with consensus.
On the analyst side, Citigroup maintained its Buy rating but trimmed its price target from $46 to $45 on July 13. Mizuho kept its Outperform rating and nudged its target up to $41. Morgan Stanley has an Equal Weight rating with a $37 target.
TD Cowen reiterated a Buy with a $44 target following Q1 results in April. Stephens bumped its target from $38 to $39 but kept an Equal Weight rating.
Across 35 analysts covering CMG, 24 have a Strong Buy rating and nine advise a Hold. The average price target sits at $42.82, a meaningful premium to where the stock is trading today.
CMG is currently near the lower end of its 52-week range of $28.04 to $54.20.
Despite the stock’s struggles, institutional money has been moving in. Assetmark Inc. raised its CMG position by 63.2% in Q1, adding 216,277 units to end the quarter with 558,547 worth about $17.88 million.
Several smaller firms also started new positions in the stock during Q4 2025 and Q1 2026. Institutional investors now hold 91.3% of CMG’s outstanding stock.
On the news front, Chipotle confirmed its restaurants were not affected by a cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to Taco Bell. The company also opened its first location in Mexico during the quarter, a milestone in its international expansion.
The stock carries a P/E ratio of 31.63 and a 50-day moving average of $32.60, where it is now trading closely in line.
