Elon Musk said on X that he is “highly confident” SpaceX will launch Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 AI computers into orbit in 2027. The announcement came alongside news that SpaceX’s Nasdaq 100 weighting could more than double later this month.

SpaceX stock closed 2% higher at $151.21 on Friday. That marked its third straight weekly gain, with shares rising 2% for the week.

The Nasdaq 100 weighting for SpaceX is projected to rise from 1.28% to around 2.82%, according to Bloomberg, citing preliminary index data. The final number will be confirmed later this month.

About $1.7 trillion in assets tracked the Nasdaq 100 at the end of the second quarter. That includes the $481 billion Invesco QQQ Trust. A higher weighting could push billions of dollars into SpaceX shares through passive fund buying.

SpaceX joined the Nasdaq 100 in July with a relatively low weighting because most shares were locked up after its IPO. As those lockup periods expired, the free float expanded. Concerns about heavy insider selling during the first two lockup expirations in August did not come true.

SpaceX Goes All-In on Nvidia

SpaceX is building its AI infrastructure exclusively around Nvidia. The two companies have adapted the Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 platform for use in space, adjusting for weight, radiation, and thermal conditions.

The NVL72 platform combines 72 Rubin graphics processing units with 36 Vera central processing units. Musk has described the orbital version as “simpler, lower cost, denser and lighter than a traditional rack.”

SpaceX Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen previously said the company is exclusively using Nvidia chips. He said SpaceX is targeting its first orbital computing satellite launch next year, with larger deployments planned for 2028.

SpaceX’s own IPO prospectus had put the launch window at “as early as 2028.” Musk later moved that up to the fourth quarter of 2027.

Orbital Data Centers in Space

SpaceX is calling these satellites Starmind. The first ones are expected to carry one rack of computing power, using solar energy, radiator cooling, and laser links based on Starlink technology.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the spacecraft would be “to some extent simpler than the next-gen V3 Starlink satellites.” The satellites will use the same bus platform as V3 Starlink, with the communications payload swapped out for computing equipment.

SpaceX argues that putting data centers in space avoids the land, electricity, and water limitations that ground-based infrastructure faces. Musk has predicted space will become “by far the cheapest place to put AI” within two to three years.

The company has sought regulatory approval for a constellation of up to one million AI satellites. Starship is expected to play a key role in lowering launch costs for large amounts of computing hardware.

SpaceX has already signed compute-rental agreements with Anthropic and Google. Nvidia held a $21 billion investment in SpaceX as of mid-2026.
