J.M. Smucker (SJM) stock rose about 4% in premarket trading on Wednesday, hitting $129.98, after the company topped quarterly earnings expectations and lifted its full-year profit outlook.

The results were driven largely by strong coffee sales and a one-time boost from tariff refunds.
For its fiscal first quarter ended July 31, Smucker posted adjusted EPS of $3.24, up from $1.90 a year ago and well ahead of the $2.22 analyst estimate. Net sales came in at $2.22 billion, a 5% increase year over year and above the $2.13 billion consensus.

Included in those adjusted earnings was an 84-cent per share benefit from tariff refunds received during the quarter. The company’s gross profit for the period hit $504.9 million, which included $115 million in tariff-related refunds.
U.S. retail coffee net sales grew 13% to $807.8 million in the quarter. Smucker said the net sales growth was primarily driven by higher net pricing for coffee.
Budget-conscious consumers, pressured by elevated inflation, have been eating at home more rather than dining out. That trend has lifted demand for staples like coffee and jams, two of Smucker’s core categories.
Easing coffee commodity prices, which had surged due to higher green coffee costs and tariffs in recent years, also pushed Smucker to adjust its pricing strategy.
Smucker now expects fiscal 2027 net sales to decline 1% to 2%, a notable improvement from its prior forecast of a 3% to 4% decline.
Full-year adjusted EPS guidance was raised to a range of $10.50 to $11.00, compared with the prior forecast of $9.75 to $10.25. Wall Street had been expecting $10.07 per share for the fiscal year.
That guidance raise, combined with the earnings beat, was enough to send the stock higher ahead of Wednesday’s open.
SJM ended Tuesday down 0.3%, but has gained 5.2% this month and is up 28% year to date as of Tuesday’s close.
The quarter’s results reflect steady consumer demand for Smucker’s ready-to-eat meals and coffee products, even as the broader packaged food space has faced pressure.
The company’s Folgers and Dunkin’ branded coffee lines sit at the heart of the business, and this quarter made clear that pricing power in that segment remains intact.
Smucker’s raised annual sales guidance now calls for only a modest decline, compared to the steeper drop it had previously warned investors about.
Wall Street’s full-year EPS estimate of $10.07 now sits below the low end of Smucker’s own guidance range of $10.50 to $11.00.
SJM stock has been one of the stronger performers in the packaged food space this year, up 28% year to date heading into Wednesday’s session.
