TL;DR
Coinbase has unveiled a first-of-its-kind derivatives product that merges the performance of leading U.S. technology stocks with cryptocurrency ETFs into a single tradable instrument. The Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures, set to debut on September 22, aims to give investors diversified exposure across two historically separate markets while offering capital efficiency and strategic risk management.
The Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index consists of 10 equally weighted components, combining the “Magnificent 7” U.S. tech giants with Coinbase’s stock and two crypto ETFs associated with BlackRock. The stocks include Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla, while the crypto portion includes the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) and the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA). Coinbase Global Inc. (COIN) rounds out the list. Each asset represents 10% of the index, with quarterly rebalancing to maintain equal weighting.
These futures contracts are monthly and cash-settled, with each unit representing $1 multiplied by the index price. For example, if the index is valued at $3000, a single contract would have a notional value of $3000. This structure is designed to be straightforward for traders while enabling efficient capital deployment. MarketVector serves as the official index provider, overseeing composition and rebalancing.
Coinbase positions the product as a tool for thematic exposure to innovation and growth, combining transformative technology companies with blockchain-native assets. The built-in diversification helps mitigate overexposure to any single stock or ETF, while the multi-asset nature allows for more nuanced risk management. The company describes this launch as the beginning of a “new era of multi-asset derivatives” that broadens access to different asset classes in one package.
At first, the Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures will be offered via partner trading platforms. Coinbase has announced intentions to provide access to retail investors soon, indicating a wider rollout plan. By integrating both traditional equities and crypto ETFs, Coinbase is targeting a growing demand for products that straddle the line between conventional finance and digital assets.
