31-Aug-2026 CoinCentral

TLDR

  • Metaplanet transferred over 2,400 BTC worth around $186M to Coinbase Prime across August 25 and 28, followed by a 3,000 BTC transfer worth $237M on August 29.
  • A further 800 BTC worth $62.2M was deposited to Coinbase Prime, bringing total transfers to the platform to over 3,200 BTC since late August.
  • CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed the moves are custodial in nature, not a signal to sell.
  • Metaplanet holds approximately 43,000 BTC with a total cost basis of around $4.09B, averaging roughly $96,191 per coin.
  • The company is also advancing plans for a US-listed Bitcoin treasury venture called Superplanet, involving a contribution of 2,100 BTC and $2.5M in cash.

Metaplanet moved more than $420M worth of Bitcoin into Coinbase Prime in less than a week, and the crypto market barely blinked.

The Tokyo-listed firm deposited approximately 2,400 BTC, worth around $186M, across two tranches on August 25 and August 28. That was quickly followed by a 3,000 BTC transfer valued at roughly $237M on August 29. Then came a further 800 BTC deposit worth approximately $62.2M, tracked by blockchain platform Onchain Lens.

That brings total transfers to Coinbase Prime since late August to over 3,200 BTC.

For anyone reading blockchain data without context, the numbers looked alarming. Large exchange deposits have historically been read as a prelude to selling.

But Coinbase Prime is not a standard retail exchange. It is an institutional prime brokerage platform offering custody, trading, and financing services. For companies running large Bitcoin treasuries, it is closer to a bank vault than a sell order.

CEO Simon Gerovich moved quickly to address the speculation, stating plainly that the transfers are custodial moves with no intent to liquidate.

Not the First Time

This is not the first time Metaplanet has triggered on-chain anxiety. Earlier in August, the company moved over 5,000 BTC between its own internal custodial addresses. Gerovich called those routine adjustments too, the kind of treasury housekeeping large institutional holders do regularly.

Metaplanet now holds approximately 43,000 BTC in total. Its aggregate cost basis sits at around $4.09B, putting its average purchase price at roughly $96,191 per coin.

The strategy follows the MicroStrategy playbook: use equity raises, convertible bonds, and operational cash flow to accumulate Bitcoin as a primary treasury reserve asset.

Metaplanet has previously stated it intends to use its Bitcoin holdings for yield-generating activities such as lending to cover operational costs. Coinbase Prime offers exactly those kinds of financing services to institutional clients, which adds further context to the repeat deposits.

Superplanet: The US Expansion

Beyond the custodial transfers, Metaplanet is pushing forward on a separate initiative. The company is proposing to contribute 2,100 BTC along with $2.5M in cash to a new venture called Superplanet.

Superplanet is planned as a US-based, Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin treasury platform, built in partnership with Super League Enterprises.

The 2,100 BTC contribution would represent roughly 4.9% of Metaplanet’s current holdings. Shareholder approval is required, with a vote targeted for Q4 2026.

Bitcoin’s price showed minimal reaction to the transfers, even as hundreds of millions of dollars in BTC moved on-chain in plain view.

The most recent deposit of 800 BTC worth approximately $62.19M was confirmed by Onchain Lens and represents a continuation of Metaplanet’s established pattern of institutional-grade Bitcoin treasury management.
