Microsoft (MSFT) stock remains under pressure below $500 as investors assess the cost of the company’s AI expansion. MSFT stock has weakened after failing to hold gains above the key level, while questions around spending, competition and service reliability shape market sentiment.
Microsoft continues to invest heavily in data centers, processors and cloud capacity. However, investors now want clearer evidence that AI revenue can grow fast enough to support the rising cost of that expansion.
MSFT stock moved above $500 and reached more than $517 during its two-month rebound. The recovery lost momentum, and shares later slipped below the 20-day simple moving average, which had acted as short-term support. The stock also faces resistance from several moving averages near the $500 area. Microsoft previously traded above $555 before falling sharply, and the latest reversal shows that buyers have struggled to maintain control after the recent recovery.
Microsoft spent about $41 billion on capital expenditure in its fiscal fourth quarter, including $5.6 billion through finance leases. Around two-thirds of that spending went toward processors, GPUs, and other AI-related equipment with shorter useful lives. The company still generated strong cash flow during the quarter. Operating cash flow reached $55.4 billion, while free cash flow totaled $19.6 billion. Those figures show that Microsoft continues to fund its expansion from a base of internal cash generation.
Microsoft is expanding Azure and AI infrastructure as competition across cloud computing grows. Major technology companies are also increasing spending on data centers, advanced chips, and AI services, creating a demanding environment for market share. Service disruptions have added another issue for investors monitoring Microsoft’s cloud strategy. Reliable performance remains important as businesses depend more heavily on Azure and related services for daily operations and AI workloads.
The main question now centers on whether Microsoft can convert its large infrastructure investments into faster revenue and profit growth. Higher spending can support future capacity, but the market continues to watch how quickly customer demand translates into financial returns. MSFT stock remains sensitive to spending trends, cloud growth, and guidance. A sustained move back above $500 could improve momentum, while continued weakness may keep attention on support levels and the pace of AI-related revenue growth.
