The trigger for the original surge, and the reason buyers are returning now, is Nu’s Q2 2026 earnings report released in mid-August. For the first time, the company’s quarterly net income crossed the $1 billion mark, coming in at approximately $1.06 to $1.1 billion.

That represents a 67% increase compared to the same quarter a year ago. Revenue grew around 52% year-over-year, and EPS came in 13% above analyst estimates.

Analyst Upgrades Piled In After Earnings

The earnings report triggered a wave of analyst action. Citi made the most aggressive move, double-upgrading NU from Sell to Buy and setting a price target of $18.

BTG Pactual also upgraded the stock to Buy with an $18 target. JPMorgan raised its target to $20, while UBS lifted its to $18.20. Those calls have continued to influence how investors are pricing the stock heading into September.

One analyst also raised their fair value estimate to $23, citing the $1 billion quarterly profit milestone as a key factor behind the call.

Adding to the positive setup, Nu announced a $1 billion share buyback program. That gave investors another reason to stay interested after the initial post-earnings drift lower.

Broad Market Backdrop Helping

Tuesday’s rally is not happening in isolation. U.S. equities are broadly higher, with the S&P 500 up 0.6%, the Dow Jones adding 0.8%, and the Nasdaq rising 0.5%. That kind of risk-on environment tends to lift high-growth fintech names.

Nu’s customer base now stands at approximately 139 million, with continued expansion in Mexico and Colombia giving analysts long-term growth narratives to point to.

The stock is still trading well below its 52-week high of $18.98. With multiple analyst price targets sitting between $18 and $23, there is a gap between current prices and where Wall Street sees fair value.

Year-to-date, NU is still down around 14%, which puts today’s move in context. The stock has had a rough 2026 overall, and today’s buying reflects some of that being unwound.

Technical sentiment on the stock is rated as Strong Buy, and average daily trading volume sits at over 75 million, reflecting the level of interest the stock continues to attract.
