Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) shares traded slightly lower after reports emerged that the company is in discussions to support a massive artificial intelligence infrastructure project involving OpenAI. While the report reinforced Nvidia’s leadership in the AI industry, the news failed to spark fresh buying, with investors instead taking a cautious approach.
According to reports, Nvidia is considering providing approximately $250 billion in guarantees that would allow OpenAI to lease a planned 10-gigawatt AI data center in southern Ohio. The facility is being developed by SB Energy, the energy subsidiary of SoftBank, and would become one of the largest AI computing campuses in the world if completed.
Although the project’s exact location has not been officially confirmed, details closely match a proposed development at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The site has been identified as a suitable location for large-scale data center operations due to its available land and power infrastructure.
Under the reported arrangement, SB Energy would finance, build, and operate the facility, while Nvidia’s guarantees would help OpenAI secure long-term access to the computing resources needed to train increasingly advanced AI models. Neither company has announced a final agreement, suggesting negotiations are still underway.
If completed, the campus would require enormous amounts of advanced computing hardware, networking equipment, cooling systems, and electricity, highlighting the growing investment required to support next-generation artificial intelligence.
Despite the headline-grabbing size of the proposed project, Nvidia stock failed to move higher. The muted market reaction reflects growing investor discipline after the company’s remarkable rally over the past several years.

Rather than responding to ambitious infrastructure announcements, many investors now want clearer evidence that such projects will generate meaningful revenue and earnings growth. Large AI developments often take years to complete before they begin contributing significantly to financial results.
The slight decline in Nvidia shares also suggests that expectations surrounding the company remain exceptionally high. With Nvidia already viewed as the dominant supplier of AI chips, investors may require stronger near-term catalysts before pushing the stock higher.
The reported Ohio facility fits into a much broader effort to expand AI infrastructure across the United States. OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and investment firm MGX have previously announced plans to develop 10 gigawatts of AI computing capacity by 2029, requiring multiple large-scale data centers across the country.
Although the Ohio campus has not been officially identified as one of the Stargate project’s locations, its reported size closely aligns with those long-term expansion ambitions. Such facilities are expected to support growing demand for AI services from businesses, governments, and consumers.
As AI adoption accelerates, companies are investing heavily not only in software but also in the physical infrastructure needed to power increasingly sophisticated models.
