28-Jul-2026 CoinCentral

TLDRs;

  • Rivian shares climbed ahead of earnings as investors focused on R2 delivery progress and future growth potential.
  • Piper Sandler upgraded Rivian, citing improved demand expectations and a stronger financial position.
  • The company faces pressure to accelerate deliveries significantly during the second half of 2026.
  • Q2 earnings will test whether Rivian can balance growth ambitions with profitability concerns.

Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) shares moved higher ahead of the company’s second-quarter earnings report as investors evaluated whether the electric vehicle maker’s R2 rollout can become a turning point for its growth strategy.

The stock closed Monday’s session at $16.48, marking a 4% gain after Piper Sandler upgraded Rivian from Neutral to Overweight. Analyst Alexander Potter also raised the company’s price target from $18 to $20, pointing to improving demand conditions, a smoother R2 launch process, and a strengthened balance sheet.

Rivian’s move higher came despite broader market weakness, with the Nasdaq Composite declining 0.18% during the session. The gains reflected renewed optimism around the company’s ability to expand deliveries and improve its position in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.

However, investors remain focused on whether Rivian can convert positive sentiment surrounding its R2 vehicle program into measurable financial results.

R2 Delivery Momentum In Focus

The upcoming earnings report will provide a crucial update on Rivian’s progress after the company began delivering its first R2 vehicles in late April. The new model is expected to play an important role in Rivian’s efforts to increase production volumes and reach a wider customer base.

Rivian delivered 22,559 vehicles during the first half of the year. To achieve its full-year delivery target of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles, the company must deliver between 42,441 and 47,441 additional units during the second half.

That target represents a significant increase in quarterly output. Rivian delivered 10,365 vehicles in the first quarter and 12,194 in the second quarter, meaning future quarters must show substantial acceleration. The company would need to average at least 21,221 deliveries per quarter under the lower end of its annual guidance, while the upper target requires quarterly deliveries closer to 23,721 vehicles.

The challenge for Rivian is proving that the early R2 momentum can translate into consistent production growth without creating additional operational pressure.

Earnings Will Test Financial Progress

Rivian is scheduled to release its second-quarter earnings after Thursday’s market close, with investors expected to closely examine revenue growth, margins, production efficiency, and cash usage.

The company has projected quarterly revenue between $1.55 billion and $1.65 billion, exceeding the $1.45 billion estimate from LSEG earlier in July. Rivian also reported preliminary cash reserves of approximately $5.3 billion at the end of the quarter, providing some financial flexibility as it continues investing in vehicle production.

Earlier this year, Rivian reported a consolidated gross profit of $119 million, although its automotive business continued operating at a loss with a negative gross profit of $62 million. This makes profitability improvement a major focus for investors.

Investors Watch Risks Ahead

Although Rivian’s recent stock performance has improved, the rally has not fully reversed previous losses. Shares declined 9.2% between July 17 and July 24 and remain below earlier levels despite the latest recovery.

The company also recently completed a stock offering of 86.25 million shares at $15.50 each, generating approximately $1.32 billion in estimated net proceeds. While the capital raise reduced near-term funding concerns, it also increased the number of outstanding shares, creating dilution concerns among investors.

The upcoming earnings call will likely focus on how Rivian plans to use the additional capital and whether its R2 expansion strategy can generate sustainable growth.
