Volo Protocol revealed a $3.5 million hack on its Sui-based vaults, the majority of which, about $500,000, has been frozen in the course of ongoing recovery efforts. The team committed to handling the loss themselves and not making users bear it, which emphasized the security risks that DeFi protocols and smart contract infrastructures on new Layer 1 blockchain networks continue to face.
The attack led to their vault contracts on the Sui blockchain being exploited for unauthorized withdrawals totaling $3.5 million. After the team found out about the attack, they went ahead with incident response actions and sought help from other ecosystem partners to freeze around $500,000 of the stolen digital assets.

Freezing funds is a standard response measure that can confine an attacker’s actions through centralized exchanges and bridge pathways.

This Protocol assured their users that they would be able to restore the entire amount of the loss from within their own resources, which means that the depositors would not have been affected in any way by the breach. This method is designed to protect user confidence and the positive image of the protocol in the intensely competitive DeFi space. The expectation now for projects that want to uphold their reputation after a security incident is to have open communications and detailed analyses of the incident.

The breach highlights that contract audits, oracle mechanisms, and vault control logic remain significant risks on relatively new chains. Even though the Sui platform provides features such as high channels of communication, safe Move-based programming, and the features of composability and fast changes may reveal new points for attacks.
Besides, continuous surveillance, offering rewards for discovering bugs, and carrying out formal checks through a verification process should be considered as essential components that can enhance the ability of a protocol to withstand unexpected events.
