Bitcoin Adoption in the Global South: How Trezor Academy Is Driving Real Change

Welcome to Trezor Pulse! This month, we’re sharing self-custody tips, second wallet strategies, Trezor Suite updates, and a five-star review we can’t stop smiling about.

Let’s dive into the latest updates and insights from Trezor.

Over to you, Josef

Hi,

I’m Josef Tětek, Trezor Academy Lead at Trezor.

You’ve probably heard about Trezor Academy, our global, non-profit initiative that accelerates Bitcoin adoption through free, in-person education. But you might not know that Alex Gladstein’s book Check Your Financial Privilege inspired the whole thing! It showed that Bitcoin helping out with financial inclusion wasn’t just a theory and that it is actually already happening. It’s already fixing broken systems around the world.

That’s when I knew we had to support bottom-up, community-led education. At Trezor Academy, I work with local leaders who are trusted in their communities and can teach Bitcoin in the proper cultural context. You can’t just fly in as an outsider and preach. Local adoption needs local voices.

The reality? In many parts of Africa and South America, fiat money doesn’t work. As a store of value or as a medium of exchange, the infrastructure and credibility simply aren’t there. Cross-border payments are often impossible… unless you use Bitcoin.

This is where the real Bitcoin revolution is happening. Bitcoin’s future may well be decided in the Global South, as it offers a strong alternative to fiat money’s most pressing issues and is permissionless, unlike any other potential solution. Bitcoin thrives in hostile financial environments, which then drives adoption and innovation.

One example is Machankura, a project that lets users send and receive sats using a phone number. Communities across eight African countries (and counting!) already use the Lightning Network on basic mobile phones. Projects like this are reshaping entire economies. In many ways, the Bitcoin economy is more advanced in Africa than Europe or America, and the population is far younger.

If you’re not paying attention to Bitcoin’s revolution in the Global South, you probably should be.

Thanks to everyone supporting this project, from local organizers to Bitcoiners, for spreading the word.

Take control.

Josef Tětek

Bitcoin education in Kenya: Meet Linda, from Trezor Academy

Linda Wambui Kariuki has supported Trezor Academy’s mission to spread Bitcoin education globally since 2024 by teaching local communities in Kenya about Bitcoin.

“Seeking a freer and fairer future, I joined Students for Liberty, where I discovered Bitcoin’s transformative potential. I began teaching Bitcoin at Trezor Academy, and through this experience, I saw its power to inspire and empower communities. The decentralized and transparent nature of Bitcoin, alongside its ability to guarantee financial inclusion for the unbanked, especially in the informal settlements resonated deeply with me. To further this impact, I launched Bitsavers Eduhub, a project that promotes Bitcoin as a store of value in Kenya’s youth-dominated society grappling with unemployment.”

Trezor Experts share their top security tips

We asked our Trezor Experts:

“If you could only give one tip to a new Trezor user, what would it be?”

Here are their answers…

Don’t make your PIN 50 digits long (unless you really want to) — you’re the one who’ll have to enter it every time you use your device. A 4–6 digit PIN is plenty secure. 😉”
“Not your keys, not your coins 👀”
Adhere to best practices, and you won’t lose your crypto.”
There’s always time to take a breath and double-check your transaction details before confirming the transaction.”
Perform the simulated check-backup. This will save you a future heart-attack if ever having to use your backup for the purpose of recoving your wallet and asset.”
The main thing I always stress out is: Never share your wallet backup with anyone. You’ll only need it for a backup check or wallet recovery, and it should only be entered directly on your Trezor device — nowhere else.”
“If there were a 🔥 in my house and I could only grab one thing (besides my cats), I’d take my backup, not the device. The Trezor can be replaced. Your recovery seed can’t.
Keep your wallet backup accessible to you. Do not bury the only copy in the backyard.”
“The passphrase feature is powerful — but it’s not for messing around. If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, leave it alone. One typo, and you could lock yourself out of your own funds. Not ideal. 😅”
Passphrase is not the same as Password, it cannot be changed later and needs to be carefully written down and securely stored. Do not rely on committing it to memory.”
Don’t store your backup anywhere digital. It’s counter-intuitive of cold storage. Anything digital and accessible to being online can be compromised.”

Final thought:

At the Trezor office, we’ve been running a few extra activities as part of Feel Good April!

Spring is all about renewal and growth, so it felt like the perfect time to reset our daily routines. That’s why we brought back our Feel Good April initiative: to give everyone a small boost toward a healthier lifestyle!

We’ve been slowing down, getting active, and reflecting together, from gym workshops to breathwork sessions and guided group coaching.

Let’s be honest, the last few months have been stressful in crypto and the wider market. So if you haven’t already, why not take a little time this week to feel good?

Stay healthy, stay secure.

Take control,

The Trezor Team
