On September 11, Raymond James equity analyst Brian Gesuale launched research coverage with an “Outperform” recommendation alongside an $80 price objective. This target represents potential appreciation of more than 25% based on where shares were valued when the research note was published.

The analyst’s primary thesis centers on Rocket Lab’s evolution beyond being merely a launch provider. The company has developed comprehensive mission capabilities spanning the entire value chain, delivering components, software platforms, and satellite systems for civil, commercial, and defense applications.

This diversified revenue model, which integrates launch operations with space systems manufacturing, generates predictable income streams that standalone launch competitors cannot replicate.

Gesuale contends that investors are currently underestimating RKLB’s future earnings power as government defense and scientific programs expand.

Unprecedented Backlog Growth and Revenue Momentum

Rocket Lab reported a contract backlog totaling $2.36 billion at the conclusion of its latest quarter, marking a 137% surge versus the comparable year-ago period. This level of forward revenue visibility is uncommon for growth-stage aerospace companies.

Revenue for the quarter reached $234.1 million, reflecting 62% year-over-year expansion. The company maintains a cash position exceeding $2 billion.

Raymond James highlighted these metrics as indicators that market participants are not adequately valuing the company’s future profitability trajectory.

The space firm recently executed its 95th Electron rocket mission, successfully placing an Earth-observation satellite into a 500-kilometer orbit. This marked the company’s 16th orbital launch in the current year, with another commercial mission scheduled before September concludes.

Institutional Accumulation Contrasts With Insider Dispositions

Significant institutional capital has flowed into RKLB shares. Virginia Retirement Systems purchased 10,539 shares during Q2 valued at approximately $1.07 million. BlackRock established a fresh position worth around $4.1 billion. Bank of America initiated a new holding valued at roughly $437 million. Institutional ownership has climbed to 71.78% of outstanding shares.

Conversely, company insiders have been net sellers. Throughout the preceding 90 days, insiders disposed of stock valued at over $312 million through 97 separate transactions, with no recorded purchases. Chief Executive Peter Beck participated in these sales.

While portions of these transactions were conducted through pre-established Rule 10b5-1 trading arrangements and connected to tax liabilities from vested equity compensation, the aggregate selling volume remains substantial.

Raymond James isn’t the only firm expressing optimism. Berenberg Bank initiated research on September 2 with a “Buy” recommendation and an $83 price target. Citizens JMP maintains a $130 objective. The Wall Street consensus stands at “Moderate Buy” with an average target price of $107.32.

A single analyst, Weiss Ratings, holds a “Sell” position. Piper Sandler carries a “Neutral” stance with an $83 target.

Current analyst coverage includes four “Strong Buy” recommendations, fourteen “Buy” ratings, five “Hold” ratings, and one “Sell” rating.
