Management provided Q3 net revenue guidance of roughly $3.70 billion. This figure came in below Street expectations ranging from $3.76 billion to $3.80 billion — a relatively modest shortfall, yet sufficient to trigger a sharp market reaction.

The company anticipates Q3 gross margin of approximately 37.0%, representing an improvement from Q2’s 34.8% and marginally exceeding the consensus forecast of 36.5%.

The paradox lies in the fact that Q2 performance was genuinely impressive.

The semiconductor maker reported Q2 net income of $222 million, representing a dramatic reversal from the $97 million net loss recorded during the corresponding quarter last year. Earnings per share reached $0.31, marking a substantial 416.7% year-over-year surge and meeting analyst expectations.

Q2 net revenues advanced 12.7% compared to the prior year, reaching $3.49 billion, driven primarily by robust demand for microprocessor products serving AI data center infrastructure.

Data Center AI Business Gaining Momentum

The firm’s AI data center segment has emerged as a critical growth catalyst. Chief Executive Jean-Marc Chery highlighted that AI-focused data centers represent a substantial growth engine, with the company anticipating data center-related revenues to surpass $1 billion during fiscal year 2026.

This revenue stream is forecasted to more than double, exceeding $2 billion by 2027.

Chery additionally projected fourth-quarter revenues topping $4 billion, indicating that the third-quarter weakness could prove temporary.

STMicro’s portfolio encompasses microelectronic components utilized throughout consumer electronics, automotive systems, and industrial equipment. The company’s expanding AI data center exposure has attracted heightened investor interest in recent periods as hyperscale infrastructure expansion continues.

Valuation Concerns Emerge

Notwithstanding the robust Q2 performance and optimistic AI revenue projections, STM’s current valuation has become a point of debate.

The shares presently trade at a price-to-earnings multiple of approximately 428x, substantially elevated compared to historical norms. Investment research platform GuruFocus classifies the equity as “Significantly Overvalued” according to its proprietary GF Value assessment.

However, the company demonstrates strength across several financial indicators. It maintains a conservative debt-to-equity ratio of merely 0.16, and GuruFocus assigns it a GF Score of 72 out of 100, reflecting favorable ratings for financial stability, profitability metrics, and expansion potential.

No insider transaction activity has been documented over the preceding 12-month period.

Prior to Thursday’s earnings-related decline, STM shares had gained approximately 0.52% on a year-to-date basis.
