Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares jumped sharply on Wednesday after a South Korean media report said Singapore’s state investment fund Temasek is planning to invest in both companies.
Asia Business Daily reported that Temasek contacted the Korean government to discuss the timing of the investment. The fund has decided to invest directly using its own internal team rather than through outside asset managers.
Samsung and SK Hynix each rose more than 7% in Korean trade. The broader KOSPI index climbed over 4% on the day.
Both stocks have had a strong 2026. They are still up more than 100% each for the year, driven by surging demand for memory chips used in AI systems.
The rally comes after a difficult stretch. The two chipmakers sold off heavily in July as doubts grew about the pace of AI infrastructure spending. That led some investors to unwind leveraged positions.
The stocks have been recovering in recent weeks. Part of that recovery is tied to expectations that both companies will increase shareholder returns to support their stock prices.
Temasek manages a net portfolio of around S$518 billion, or about $404.5 billion. It is one of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world.
The fund reportedly believes memory chips remain undervalued in the context of the broader AI supply chain. This would be the first time Temasek has invested directly in South Korean stocks.
Temasek did not respond to requests for comment from Bloomberg or other outlets.
The investment report added momentum to a wider rally across Asian chip stocks. Japan’s Advantest, Kioxia Holdings, and Murata Manufacturing rose between 0.8% and 3.5%.
China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International added 4%. TSMC rose 0.8% in Taipei trade.
The gains across the region were also supported by earnings results out of the United States. CoreWeave and Super Micro both reported upbeat results, reinforcing confidence that AI-related demand for chips remains strong.
Chipmakers had been under pressure through much of June as investors grew cautious about inflated valuations in the sector. The recovery in early August shifted that mood.
Kioxia’s earnings were seen as a positive data point. CoreWeave’s results also helped ease concerns that AI spending growth was slowing.
For Samsung and SK Hynix, the Temasek report gave investors a fresh reason to buy. A major sovereign fund taking a direct stake would be seen as a vote of confidence in the long-term value of both companies.
