Tyson Foods (TSN) fell around 1.5% on Friday after President Trump announced an executive order targeting the concentration of power among the country’s largest beef processors. JBS dropped 1.4% at the same time, with both stocks hitting session lows shortly after the announcement.
Trump said he is “taking action to help cattle ranchers” and will sign an order “giving ranchers and farmers the right to process their own food.” The goal is to lower beef prices for consumers and give ranchers more options for how they process and sell cattle.

The order directs the Agriculture Department to make it easier for smaller processing facilities to get federal approval. It also expands interstate sales of eligible meat products and sets up a new loan program to support small and regional processors.
The backdrop here is a market that has become highly concentrated over the past few decades. According to the White House, the four largest beef packers now control about 85% of steer and heifer purchases. In the 1980s, that number was around 36%.
This executive order follows a separate action taken on August 26, when Trump temporarily allowed an additional 300,000 tons of lean beef to enter the U.S. at reduced tariff rates. That increase is capped at 100,000 tons per month and runs through November.
The administration says the extra supply will help push ground beef prices lower. But U.S. ranchers pushed back, arguing that cheaper imported beef would drag down the prices they receive for their own cattle.
In response to that backlash, Trump issued a related order calling for a review of country-of-origin labeling rules for beef. That order also asks officials to reconsider protections for gray and Mexican wolves in ranching areas, where ranchers have long complained about livestock losses.
Wall Street’s view on TSN hasn’t shifted dramatically. Analysts currently hold a Strong Buy consensus on the stock, based on four Buy ratings and four Hold ratings issued over the past three months.
The average price target sits at $67.43, which implies roughly 31% upside from current levels.
Both executive orders now set up a more competitive processing environment, which could squeeze margins for large processors like Tyson over time. Friday’s price drop reflects that concern.
TSN and JBS both moved quickly to their session lows following Trump’s announcement, suggesting the market took the news seriously right away.
