Alphabet (GOOGL) stock fell 3.6% to $344.68 on Tuesday as technology shares weakened ahead of Google’s Pixel 11 launch. However, the bigger concern for investors is whether Alphabet’s massive artificial intelligence spending can generate sufficient returns.
Google’s Made by Google event is scheduled for August 12, with the Pixel 11 lineup and Gemini AI expected to dominate the presentation. Interest is already building, with searches for “Google Pixel 11 Pro” reportedly jumping more than 400% in Canada.
Still, Pixel remains relatively small within Alphabet’s financial structure. Smartphones are included in the company’s $12.9 billion subscriptions, platforms and devices category, compared with $63.3 billion from Google Search and $24.8 billion from Google Cloud in the second quarter.
The Pixel 11 launch gives Google an opportunity to showcase Gemini through hardware and software it controls directly. New AI capabilities could strengthen the company’s consumer ecosystem and eventually reach millions of Android users.
But investors are unlikely to view the phone launch as Alphabet’s primary earnings catalyst. The more important question is whether AI can accelerate growth across Search, Cloud and other major businesses.
Google Cloud is already showing strong momentum. Revenue surged 82% year over year to $24.8 billion in the second quarter, while operating income reached $8.8 billion. Its backlog also climbed to nearly $514 billion, highlighting significant demand for cloud and AI infrastructure.
Meeting that demand is becoming increasingly expensive.Alphabet now expects 2026 capital spending of $195 billion to $205 billion, putting the midpoint at roughly $200 billion. That is above its previous $180 billion-$190 billion forecast.
Second-quarter capital expenditures reached $44.9 billion, nearly twice the amount spent during the same period last year. The spending reflects Google’s push to expand data-center capacity and secure the computing power needed for AI workloads. The strategy could support long-term growth, but it is also placing pressure on cash generation.
Alphabet produced $39.1 billion in operating cash flow during the second quarter, below its $44.9 billion capital expenditure bill. Free cash flow consequently fell to negative $5.9 billion from positive $5.3 billion a year earlier.
That deterioration is likely to keep investors focused on whether AI revenue can eventually outpace infrastructure costs.
Alphabet has argued that demand for its cloud capacity remains ahead of available supply, supporting continued investment. Yet the company must ultimately demonstrate that its spending produces durable revenue growth rather than simply expanding its cost base.
Despite the stock’s recent weakness, analysts remain largely optimistic. The supplied data shows 25 Buy ratings and five Holds, with no Sell recommendations. The consensus price target stands near $422.59.
The Pixel 11 launch could strengthen Google’s consumer AI story, but the bigger test for GOOGL stock remains financial. Investors want to see whether the company can convert its rapidly expanding Cloud business and enormous AI investment into stronger free cash flow.
For Alphabet, the challenge is becoming clear: spending $200 billion on AI may strengthen its competitive position, but shareholders will ultimately demand measurable returns from that investment.
